The Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme, which reported in July 2023, found that the scheme was not only unlawful but involved deliberate concealment of legal advice, misleading of ministers, and a culture of indifference to harm caused to welfare recipients.
The scheme ran from 2016 to 2019, raised approximately 470,000 unlawful debts, and has been linked to the deaths of individuals who received incorrect debt notices.
